Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
Peel and thinly slice the potatoes.
In a saucepan, heat the heavy cream and minced garlic over medium heat until hot.
In a greased baking dish, layer half of the potato slices, then pour half of the cream mixture over them. Sprinkle with half of the grated Gruyere cheese.
Repeat the layering process with the remaining potatoes, cream mixture, and Gruyere cheese.
