Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, baking powder and salt.
Cut the cold butter into small cubes and add them to the dry ingredients. Use a pastry cutter or your fingertips to mix the butter into the flour mixture until it resembles coarse crumbs.
In a separate bowl, whisk together the heavy cream, egg and orange zest.
Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and mix until just combined. Avoid overmixing.
Gently fold in the fresh cranberries.
Transfer the dough onto a well-floured surface and shape it into a 7-inch (18cm) round.
Cut the dough into 8 wedges and place them on the prepared baking sheet.
Remove from the oven and let the scones cool for a few minutes.
