Wash, peel, core, and chop the apples.
Place the chopped apples in a large saucepan or slow cooker.
Add sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, and lemon juice to the apples.
Cook the mixture on low heat for 4-6 hours, stirring occasionally, until the apples are soft and mushy.
Use a blender or immersion blender to puree the cooked apples until smooth.
Return the pureed mixture to the saucepan or slow cooker and continue cooking on low heat for another 2-4 hours, stirring occasionally, until the mixture thickens and darkens in color.
Once the apple butter reaches a desired consistency, transfer it to sterilized jars and let it cool completely before sealing.
Store the jars in a cool, dark place for up to 1 year.
